Tecnomodel 1:18 1970 March 701 diecast model car review
Published on: 10 August 2023

Tecnomodel recently announced a quartet of 1:18 replicas of the March 701 that was campaigned by several teams in the 1970 Formula One world championship.

Back in the good ol’ days, privateers could simply buy a chassis (for example a March) and a powerplant (for example a Ford Cosworth DFV) off the shelf and take on the likes of Ferrari on race tracks around the world. A far cry from today, when the 10 existing teams are doing their utmost to prevent anyone else from joining the grid!

Ken Tyrrell and Jackie Stewart won the world championship for Matra in 1969, before going with the March 701 for the majority of the 1970 season. Towards the end of the year, Tyrrell’s first Formula One car was introduced. Stewart scored one win with the March, taking a dominant one-lap victory in the Spanish Grand Prix. That was to be the Scot’s only success of the season, in what was generally a troubled championship defence.

Obviously, one of Tecnomodel’s four 1:18 1970 March 701 replicas will be Stewart’s winning machine from Jarama. The Italian model manufacturer will also be replicating Mario Andretti’s third-placed STP-backed car from the race, as well as his team-mate Chris Amon’s second-placed vehicle from the French Grand Prix at Clermont-Ferrand. Finally, there is Ronnie Peterson’s Antique Automobiles-entered car from the Monaco Grand Prix. This was the very first Formula One race of Superswede’s career. He just missed out on scoring a point on his debut, reaching the finish in seventh position.
