George Russell enjoyed great success as he worked his way up the single-seater ranks, beginning with winning his very first car racing championship; the 2014 BRDC Formula 4 series. He graduated to the European Formula 3 Championship in 2015, placing sixth in the points, and then improved to third in the standings a year later.
In 2017 he really got going, winning the Formula One-supporting GP3 championship at his first attempt in 2017, and then doing the same thing with the Formula 2 championship in 2018.
Russell made his Formula One debut with Williams in 2019; as a Mercedes junior driver it was decided to place him there to gain experience before promoting him to its own Formula One team. Despite having far from the best equipment on the grid at his disposal Russell impressed, finally earning his promotion to the Mercedes Formula One team for the 2022 season.
George proved straight away that he had what it takes to compete at the front of the field; against the dominant Red Bulls he scored his first Formula One race win the 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix, having also won the Sprint Race the day before. A further seven podiums during the season saw him impressively finish ahead of illustrious team-mate Lewis Hamilton in the drivers’ championship.
In 2023 Red Bull was even more dominant, while Mercedes lost a little competitiveness, so Russell had to make do with just a couple of visits to the rostrum over the course of the year. 2024 started out the same way, but the British driver was able to score the second F1 win of his career in the Austrian Grand Prix after Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and McLaren’s Lando Norris collided in the closing stages. Unfortunately a further win in Belgium (after an impressive tyre conservation run) was taken from him after his car was found to be underweight after the race.
