Aston Martin first made a fleeting appearance in the Formula One world championship in 1959, contesting a handful of races with Roy Salvadori and Carroll Shelby before deciding to plough all of its resources into its sportscar racing programme.
The marque returned to F1 racing in 2021, after Lawrence Stroll’s Racing Point team was rebranded. The outfit had initially started out as Jordan, before becoming Midland, Spyker and then Force India before Racing Point!
Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel defected from Ferrari to join Aston Martin on its F1 return, and scored a stellar second place for the squad in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Several further points finishes for Vettel and team-mate Lance Stroll (Lawrence’s son) saw the team place seventh in the constructors’ championship.
Aston Martin failed to trouble the podium in 2022, and although it scored fewer points than the previous season it did manage to retain seventh place in the teams’ standings.
Vettel retired at the end of the 2022 campaign, and was replaced by the evergreen Fernando Alonso for 2023. The team enjoyed a superb start to the year, with Alonso scoring four third place finishes in the first five races. He then scored a trio of runner-up spots across the middle of the season. Stroll also did his bit with several decent points finishes. Aston Martin ended the season a best yet fifth in the constructors’ championship.
Alonso and Stroll remain Aston Martin’s drivers for the 2024 season.
