AUTOart 1-12 1989 Honda NSR 500 diecast model bike review
Published on: 06 May 2025

First thing in the New Year, AUTOart announced a trio of 1:12 Honda NSR 500 replicas from the 1989 500cc motorcycle racing season, as ridden by legends Eddie Lawson, Wayne Gardner and Mick Doohan.

Having won three top-class championships in five years with Yamaha, Lawson defected to Honda and its NSR 500 for the 1989 campaign. The American promptly added a fourth and final 500cc title to his CV, after winning four grands prix and standing on the podium on a further nine occasions.

1987 world champion Gardner was one of Lawson’s team-mates in 1989. The highlight of the Australian’s season was winning his home race in Phillip Island, injury ruling him out of several events that year. The pairing were joined by future (multiple) world champion Mick Doohan for his rookie campaign in grand prix racing. Third place at Hockenheim, the first grand prix podium finish of his career, was the high point of the younger Australian’s year.

AUTOart’s 1:12 replicas of the 1989 Honda NSR 500 will come complete with a removable fairing to show off the machine’s engine detail, and a rider helmet.
