Sun Star 1:18 diecast model of the 1981 Ford Escort Mk.3 GL in Forest Green. The Mk.3 Escort was a major engineering and stylistic departure from the two models that had gone before. The biggest changes were the adoption of front-wheel drive, the new hatchback body and the all-new CVH overhead camshaft engines. The suspension was also now fully independent all around, departing from the archaic leaf spring arrangement found on its predecessors. Indeed, the changes were so significant that Ford was concerned that loyal customers of the previous-generation Escorts would be deterred! The car was voted European Car of the Year in 1981, defeating the Austin Metro and Fiat Panda.
