Moss arrived at the 1961 event with the aim of taking his fifth consecutive victory in this prestigious event. The Ferrari 250 GT SWB, with its relatively low weight, powerful 276 bhp engine, well sorted suspension, and disc brakes, was the perfect tool for the job. But Mike Parkes, who was also driving a 250 GT SWB, made sure that Stirling had his hands full. Eventually Moss went on to win by a lap after Parkes wore out his rear tyres too quickly.
