Minichamps has announced a 1:12 diecast model of the #58 Honda RC212V which Marco Simoncelli rode during the 2011 Moto GP season. Marco Simoncelli’s death at the Malaysian Grand Prix was tragic. Of course, the death of any rider is a tragedy, especially for family and friends, but Marco will be much missed by the bike racing world for he was, without doubt, the most charismatic personality in the sport. Shortly after Marco’s death, Minichamps announced the 1:12 replica of his Gresini Honda RC212V. This might appear to be little more than a piece of commercial opportunism, but we can confirm that the model was being planned well before recent events. In fact, we were in discussion with Minichamps for this bike to be a very limited release, perhaps to be shared exclusively between Minichamps’ own shop in Aachen and Diecast Legends. However, the demand from importers and retailers around the world after Marco Simoncelli’s death put Minichamps under pressure to increase production, to meet the demand from his fans. There have also been questions about the price on this Marco Simoncelli Gresini Honda as it costs more than the standard 1:12 2011 Moto GP bikes. Well Minichamps has now explained that the increase is to cover the cost of the commemorative packaging.
