AUTOart has released a 1:18 diecast model of the Jaguar XJS Cabriolet in white. The Jaguar XJS appeared in 1975 as a replacement for the iconic E-Type, so it had a lot to live up to. During its lifetime it never had the sporting image of the E-type, but was regarded as a very competent grand tourer. Unfortunately, Jaguar’s timing was not good. The car was launched in the middle of a fuel crisis, so the market for a 5.3 litre V12 gas guzzler wasn’t particularly big, and sales were poor. Not even TV appearances in the Return of the Saint and The Avengers could help Jaguar to shift them. But performance-wise the XJS compared well with other sports cars of the time. It accelerated to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds, and could reach a top speed of 142 mph. It wasn’t until the early ‘80s that the car became more popular, and sales began to improve. Jaguar launched a high efficiency version, the XJS HE, they also added to the range a 3.6 litre, straight six engine that produced 221 bhp. The Jaguar XJS cabriolet was introduced in 1983; it was the first open top car that Jaguar had produced for nine years. Whatever your opinion on the XJS, it’s still a very significant car in the marque’s history.
